Lots Of Help

Did you know that there is a link on the Viva Survivors site that takes you to a random post?

You can click here and the magic of the internet will, today, whisk you away to one of almost 2000 posts.

(there’s a very small chance that it will bring you back here!)

I just used the link three times and it gave me these posts:

  • Show Your Working – exploring the idea of demonstrating what you have done.
  • And So On – thoughts on engaging with questions in the viva.
  • Unscripted – a short post about the value of rehearsal.

If you’re looking for help with the viva there is a lot of it on this site now. A lot. And there is even more out there in the world. Your institution, your supervisors, your friends, other great blogs and resources.

Whatever you need for the viva, whatever’s missing, you can find help if you look for it or if you ask.

And if you’re not sure what you need then you can’t go too wrong by clicking to get a random post of viva help.

Five Minutes of Reading

A few years ago I used a little bit of code to make a random post link: use the link and you find yourself reading one of the 1700+ posts I’ve written! I just did that five times and got the following results:

If you find yourself with five minutes to spare one day and are looking for something to help with the viva, then the random post link could be interesting.

If you want to spend five minutes every day reading something to help your viva then subscribe and get each new post sent to you when it goes on the site.

Pick A Post, Any Post

With the help of a plugin and several hours of banging my head against the desk I came up with a little curiosity for the site: www.viva-survivors.com/randpost/ – a link that redirects to a random post from the 1000+ in the archive so far!

The first five it gave me were:

  1. Two Days After – a few thoughts about the end of the PhD.
  2. Your Greatest Hits – encouraging reflection on what you’ve done!
  3. Relatively Important – a post trying to put the viva in perspective.
  4. Interesting Challenges – another post encouraging a little reflection for viva prep.
  5. Ten Out Of Ten – how do you feel you measure up as you come close to finishing?

I’ve put a Randomly… section in the sidebar of the site, somewhere to click if you just want something else to read. With over three years of writing, I’m looking for interesting ways to curate older posts and present them. A random post link seemed like a simple way to start.

Click the link – www.viva-survivors.com/randpost/ – what did you find?
